Irrigation and drainage - Irrigation and drainage - Construction and maintenance: Most subsurface drains are constructed by excavating a trench, installing a tile, and backfilling the trench. Control of the machines to assure proper slope of the drain has been a major problem, but recent development in excavation technology, including the use of laser beams for grade control, have helped to. ii (vi-NEH, September ) Part Irrigation Guide Acknowledgments Part , Irrigation Guide, is an addition to the National Engineering Hand-book series. Abstract. In no other country, perhaps, is the identification between water, irrigation, and agriculture as strong as in Egypt. Several phases of agrarian and technical change throughout its long history have taken Egypt to a situation where farmers grow between one to three crops a year on million ha after lifting water from canals and drains, and sometimes from aquifers.   Outcomes of the irrigation reform have been only mixed. At the national level, water savings seem to have increased. Water use has decreased f hm 3 in to 15, hm 3 in , and irrigated land has increased from M ha in to M ha in (Hernandez Garcia, ). There has also been a diversification in the water sources.
